Dr. Fumi Kurihara
Fumi is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Systems at the University of Münster. She investigates how users interact with agentic systems to better understand the social implications of algorithmic decision-making.
Her work draws on qualitative methods to explore both how users engage with and respond to algorithmic systems and how these systems process user-generated data. A central interest in her work is how information systems can meaningfully serve society, particularly in contexts where user behaviour and system design shape one another. She is especially committed to understanding how people experience, interpret, and trust AI-driven systems.
Before joining the Flow Factory, Fumi completed her Ph.D. in Management (Business Innovation, Information Systems) at the University of St. Gallen, where her dissertation examined how users influence and adapt to algorithmic outputs on online matching platforms.
Fumi is also actively engaged on issues around diversity, equity and inclusion as a podcaster and public speaker, and has previously worked internationally in the areas of global health and human rights on issues around access to healthcare, gender, and digital health.
